probably your windows installer is corrupt. try the following:
If your computer is running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98,
1. find Instmsi.exe
2. double-click to launch

Then try and reinstall MSN from the setup prog.

I have an actual fix for error code 1601. And all the install/unistall problems that all of you are experiencing, especialy if running windows XP. I must first say that all of this info is from a very patient and brilliant tech from DELL,
1, click start->run-> then type cmd ..then enter.
2. once prompted to the dialog box, enter
msiexec /unreg (REMEMBER TO ALWAYS PUT A SPACE IN BETWEEN THE msiexec and the foward slash "/" .. then press "enter".. then "F3", this will duplicate the previous command verbatium( i.e. "msiexec /unreg") press enter again.
3. enter msiexec /unregister
press enter then close out of the dialog box.
Now you WILL be able to install messenger 6.2 w/o that pain in the butt error code 1601...
I hope you read this before a support tech with little experience from msn has you uninstalling windows and all of your other software..

HEy, I've been trying to download msn 6.0, but everytime i get to the part where I have to install it....I get a message saying "MSN mesenger setup has failed with error code 1601. this is fucking me off. If someone actually has a way to solve the error 1601 then plz tell us stop bringing up that bollox about unreg. Cuz no one seems to get it to work using that. I think the best thing to do is keep 6.1 because what is the major reason getting 6.2

Well, unregistering msiexec has allowed me to open msn messenger without having the 5 minute installing thing. One issue I've found with this is if i run the installation program from microsoft, it still comes up with the 1601 error. I think this is the problem other people are having. Since I had 6.2 msn messenger on before, i knew it worked. But since the install file still gives the 1601 error, I'm thinking that it wouldn't allow me to install it period. Anyone out there have a solution? I havent tried "msiexec /regserver". What exactly does that do?
